A Summary of specific Catholic teachings on the End times

These are the teachings of the Catholic Church on the End Times that must be believed by all the Faithful.

The Resurrection of the Dead. The teachings of the Catholic Church teach the actual resurrection of all flesh in their own bodies (including the damned), not merely a spiritual resurrection. This teaching is affirmed in both the Nicene Creed and the Apostles Creed.
The General Judgment. After the resurrection of all flesh, there will follow the universal judgment. Christ will sit upon the throne of judgment and render to each man according to his works (Matthew 16:27).
The Destruction of the World. The world will be destroyed at the command of Our Divine Lord Jesus Christ. The fulfillment of this prophecy will be supernatural and not as a result of atomic wars, or geological or astronomical disturbances.
The Reign of the Church Victorious. The faithful of the Church will live and reign with Christ forever. The devils and evil men will be damned forever without reprieve. That means the terrorist and the Godless people…
Errors in Interpreting End-Time Prophecy
Over the history of the Church, some errors have sprung up concerning the End Times.

Millenarianism?
The teaching of millenarianism, that Christ before the Final Judgment will come visibly to rule over this world, is a serious error condemned by Pius XII. Indeed, the teaching of millenarianism is the very thing the Antichrist will need to set up his rule over the world.

Setting Dates
A common error is to try to set actual dates on the Second coming. The Sacred Scriptures point out this error: But of that day or hour no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father. (Mark 13:32).

However, in 1832 Pope Gregory XVI did indicate that the time of the “plague of locusts (Revelation 9:3)” had arrived in his Encyclical

The “Rapture”
A popular belief of the 20th Century among Bible fundamentalists is the concept of a taking up of the true Christians before the coming of the Antichrist. Their scriptural support for this theory largely vague and symbolic, and based on the assumption that the rapture theory is true.

They cite I Thessalonians 4:16 as the basis for this claim. However, the verse before, I Thessalonians 4:15, clearly shows that the dead in Christ rise first. This same event, the first ressurection, occurs after the return of Our Divine Lord Jesus Christ and the defeat of the Antichrist. In fact, those that rule and reign with Christ a thousand years are those that are martyred during the reign of the Antichrist. (Revelations 20:4-6)

The Rebuilding of the Temple
In this day we find many sects and denominations looking for the re-building of a temple in Jerusalem with great anticipation. Why any Christian would welcome such a thing is beyond me. If animals are again sacrificed in a temple in Jerusalem, would not the blood of every calf, lamb or goat sacrificed be a denial of the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ upon the cross? (Hebrews 10:10) Is not the denial of the perfect sacrifice of Jesus the very spirit of the antichrist?

In Matthew 24:2, Jesus prophesies about the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Jesus says nothing about the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem. It is true that Jesus said, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” (John 2:19) However, Jesus was speaking of His Body, which is the Temple of the Holy Ghost. (John 2:21)

The prophesy of the destruction of the Temple came about in 70 AD with the siege of Vespasian. There were a few stones left of the foundation left. Later, Emperor Julian the Apostate attempted to discredit the prophesy of Our Divine Lord Jesus Christ by ordering the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem. Jews from all over the Roman Empire supported the task with great zeal and huge amounts of gold and silver. The task was accompanied by great scorn for the Christians in the empire, who believed that the Temple was not to be rebuilt. In order to provide a foundation for the “new temple” the final stones left of the old foundation were cleared away, completing the prophecy of Jesus.

As they began the re-building, earthquakes broke out all over the temple mount, halting the effort. When the earthquakes subsided, they attempted to begin again. As they approached the foundations, balls of blue fire exploded from the ground burning many of the workmen. Finally the effort was abandoned without laying a single stone of the new temple.

How to Interpret End Time Prophecy is hard but very easy if you read closely…..
The Sacred Scriptures and Church teachings hold the primacy of place in what we are to understand about the end times. Moreover, the writings of the early Fathers (Patristic) and the Saints have much to say about the end times also. The Church does not censure the study of these private revelations, in so long as the prophecy comes from a virtuous source. In fact, it is even considered acceptable to study the writings of Nostradamus, who was a Catholic Scholar. However, the Church teaches us to approach any end-time prophecy with a critical eye. Here are some guidelines to follow in the study of end-time prophets.

The study should edify the soul
Studying end time prophets should draw us closer to God, not away from Him. It should not bring on a morbid preoccupation of the end times, to the exclusion of Christian charity and duties. It should not lead you to wish for the damnation of others or to hasten destruction of the world, etc. (Amos 5:18)

The study should not lead to errors of the faith
The study of end time prophecies should not lead you into beliefs contrary to the teaching of the Holy Church. You should be suspicious of any revelation that purports or promotes dogmatic errors. (Deuteronomy 13:1-3)

RESPONSE TO REASONS 3-5 (Eucharist)

3. It does not take Christ literally enough (2)

In each of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) we have the institution of the Eucharist. When the wine is presented, Christ’s wording is a bit different. Here is how it goes in Luke’s Gospel: “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood” (Luk 22:20). Here, if we were really to take Christ literally, the “cup” is the new covenant. It is not the wine, it is the cup that is holy. However, of course, even Roman Catholics would agree that the cup is symbolic of the wine. But why one and not the other? Why can’t the wine be symbolic of his death if the cup can be symbolic of the wine? As well, is the cup actually the “new covenant”? That is what he says. “This cup . . . is the new covenant.” Is the cup the actual new covenant, or only symbolic of it? See the issues?

Jesus takes the cup to share then says the following,”for I tell you [that] from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” This is an important declaration. He tells them he will not drink the wine until the Kingdom of God comes so we look to see when He drinks this wine. It is when He is on the cross.

Let’s focus on the Eucharist again. The offering at Mass is the same as the offering at the Passover-bread and wine.

The cup is two things;it is part of the Seder Service. There are 4 cups. Second,it is a container.The Catechism of the Catholic Church* makes it clear that it is the bread and wine that is offered in the Mass that becomes the Sacred Body and Precious Blood of Our Lord. The chalice is merely a container – sanctified because of its use – the Precious Blood which is contained in it (together with the Sacred Body on the paten) is the New Covenant.
The author brings up the GOSPEL OF JOHN’S DISCOURSE ON THE BREAD OF LIFE and draws this conclusion:

“Why did they walk away? Because, like all other unbelievers, they expected something of Jesus that He did not come to provide and they misunderstood His teachings and intentions.

Jesus wasn’t speaking to unbelievers in the passage.The teaching was presented to HIS DISCIPLES. It’s why Jesus turned to the remaining and questioned them,””Do you also want to leave?”
There is a difference between the Synoptic Gospels and John’s Gospel.We’ll come back to John’s Gospel in a future entry. For now we take into account the following

St. John wrote for the third generation of Christians, who already knew the Synoptics and whose deeper theological learning enabled them to understand the more profound aspect of our Lord’s teaching as well as to detect the errors of heresy and false speculation. The Synoptists deal largely with our Lord’s life and teaching in Galilee; St. John concentrates on the happenings in Judea.
St. John’s account of the public ministry of Christ comprises three passovers (four if we include 5:1), the Synoptics speak of only one Pasch, the one during which the crucifixion took place. Since Christ’s ministry doubtless began several months before the first Pasch, it lasted – according to St. John’s Gospel – at least two years and a half (three years and a half if we include 5:1); according to the Synoptic scheme, on the other hand, it extended over only one year. St. John enumerates at least three pass overs:

“And the Pasch of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem” (2:13); “Now the Pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand” (6:4); “Jesus, therefore, six days before the Pasch, came to Bethania” (12:1).

Many scholars also refer to the Pasch the words found in 5:1: “After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.” Are we then in the presence of a contradiction between St. John and the Synoptists? We do not think so. The Synoptics are not exhaustive but at best fragmentary; they considerably abridge the Savour’s public life and condense its events. Furthermore, it is not a case of three witnesses against one, but of an early Synoptic tradition in contrast with the mature theme of St. John. It is to be also noted that the Synoptic account really supposes several Paschal solemnities during our Lord’s ministry (cf. Matthew 12:1; Mark 2:23; Luke 6:1).

Here are his reasons.his reasons will be italicized.i will separate the reasons, from my responses, with a divider:
1. It takes Christ too literally

There does not seem to be any reason to take Christ literally when he institutes the Eucharist with the words, “This is my body” and “This is my blood” (Matt. 26:26-28, et al). Christ often used metaphor in order to communicate a point. For example, he says “I am the door,” “I am the vine,” “You are the salt of the earth,” and “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14) but people know that we don’t take such statement literally. After all, who believes that Christ is literally a door swinging on a hinge?

He is 100% correct that Christ often used metaphor to communicate a point. He used parables as well. Jesus did say such things as “I AM the door”, “I AM the vine” etc.
REPLY:It’s true that Christ is not literally a door swinging on a hinge when he says “I am the door.”
The BIG difference at the Passover is that Jesus is not pointing to Himself when He proclaims this IS. He’s holding up the ELEMENTS of bread and wine and says this(BREAD AND WINE)IS.
2. It does not take Christ literally enough

Let’s say for the sake of the argument that in this instance Christ did mean to be taken literally. What would this mean? Well, it seems hard to escape the conclusion that the night before Christ died on the cross, when he said, “This is my body” and “This is my blood,” that it actually was his body and blood that night before he died. If this were the case, and Christ really meant to be taken literally, we have Christ, before the atonement was actually made, offering the atonement to his disciples. I think this alone gives strong support to a denial of any substantial real presence.

REPLY:Here is what Jesus offered to the apostles that night.Note that it’s the ONLY time Jesus used the words New Covenant.I take it from the Gospel of Luke 22

And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the NEW COVENANT in my blood, which will be shed for you.

1 Corinthians 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread. 24 And giving thanks, broke, and said: Take ye, and eat: this is my body, which shall be delivered for you: this do for the commemoration of me. 25 In like manner also the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of me. 26 For as often as you shall eat this bread, and drink the chalice, you shall shew the death of the Lord, until he come.

1. if the attacks weren’t all over the map. One person claimed the host was our worship of the sun god and almost in the same breathe that the priest “orders” God into the host.

The person doesn’t say which pagan religion-just pagan. Our Apostles Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I don’t know ANY pagan religion that accepts those beliefs.NONE.
4. IF Catholics worshiped the sun god we’d be out in our yards bowing down to the sun. Hasn’t happened yet.Don’t hold your breathe waiting.There is a festival for sun god worship.Look it up. We don’t attend.
5. Someone said priests are forbidden to marry. That would be true IF Catholic men had no choice but to be priests. Most Catholic men marry.You have to be called to marriage and you have to be called to be a priest. Eastern Catholic priests can be married. It’s a discipline.Not a doctrine. It could conceivably change but it hasn’t yet.
6. Yes,Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. Someone said it was absurd. That’s exactly what the disciples of Jesus said and they left Him over the teaching. You think it takes faith to believe in Jesus. It takes an even greater leap of faith to accept His words re the Eucharist.Jesus asked the rest of the disciples if they also wished to leave Him-to walk away over the teaching.He asks us,do we also wish to walk away?
7. Yes, there were pedophile priests.The Church has sinners.
So how does pointing out the sins of Catholics disprove Catholicism?Jesus died on the cross for sins. It’s funny how we start picking out which sins and who He died for. Usually ours and not someone else’s.
We can talk about the pedophile priests in the Catholic Church but it’s always a topic someone brings up when they’ve run out of everything else and want to go for the throat. I’ll discuss it as long as we’re willing to have an honest discussion. Be prepared to face that it’s not limited to the Catholic Church either. The Church has gone miles to take care of it,make restitution to the victims;but 10 yrs from now anti Catholics will still fall back on this to attack the Church.Sometimes it’s not even real concern for the victims as much as a way to go after the Church.
I will be glad to have an HONEST discussion about it. It still does not disprove Catholicism. It just proves the Church has sinners. How could i not know-am a sinner.
8.Yes,Catholics,defend the Constitution in America. Nearly all the males in our family were members of the military. My dad fought in WWII. I have believed for some time now if we respected and loved Mary as much as Jesus did we would have a greater respect for women,motherhood and the unborn.This is my opinion.
